2018 World Championships

This just in, the Appleton Assassins are very, very good at guts.

On Labor Day weekend fourteen of the best guts teams flocked to Livonia, MI to compete for the world championship. Saturday featured a few upsets as the Bag Boyz, captained by Bobby Kronk, made some noise as they first upset Appleton in the round robin and then battled back from a 20-17 deficit to defeat Shottle Bop one game later. Their fantastic defense and incredible momentum gathered during round robin propelled them to finish Saturday in the winner's bracket semi-finals along with the Boomtown Saints, the Assassins, and Bop.

Sunday was a huge day in the history of our little sport as the ESPN crew arrived and began setting up scaffolding and cameras for live coverage on ESPN3 of the final two matches or the tournament. Most of the day went as planned besides Buck's Brigade upsetting Bag Boyz late in the day to give themselves a shot at ESPN glory. But alas, the Brigade could not take down the old wiley vets the Boomtown Saints as the Saints smacked them in the face early and never let up. So the semi-final match featured the four-time world champs the Boomtown Saints of Lansing, MI, up against the young upstarts Shottle Bop from the gorgeous Houghton/Hancock area in Michigan's upper peninsula. Although both teams caught extremely well, Bop did a better job of hitting their target, freezing out All-World superstar Michael Banghart, and securing their initial ups with phenomenal scrambling. In the end, Shottle Bop pulled away and coasted to a 21-16 victory, setting them up with final best-of-three match-up with Appleton.

In the finals, broadcast live on ESPN3 with commentary from Nick Jackson and John Sotir, Appleton proved to everyone why they're the best in the world. Shottle Bop had a hard time putting the disc through the Appleton defense and the Assassins did a great job of avoiding the lefty thumber of Carter Nettell. Appleton cruised to a 21-14 game one victory and opened up a huge 19-14 lead in game two before Bop scratched back and made a run only to fall in the end 21-18. Once again, the Appleton Assassins are on top of the guts world as they secured their third world championship.
